Generally speaking, I’m not a poorly motivated person. I catch a reasonable amount of sleep, exercise frequently and for the most part, I’m reasonably productive. But when I come to a task I really don’t want to do,  I can turn into a master procrastinator.

And while there’s many well established methods of coping with procrastination, I’ve found lighting a fire under me with a stimulant/drive/motivation stack can be highly effective. Over the past 2 years, I’ve experimented with a number of nootropics and stimulants which I’ve found very helpful for getting me through the most banal of tasks. Below are three stacks I fall back on when times are tough.

Obligatory warning: A motivation stack isn’t a substitute for discipline or a long term solution for a complete lack of drive or energy. It’s intended to be a solution to a short term problem or goal in sight. Think of a motivation stack as hitting the boost or sprint button. It’s great every so often, but long term – it’s unsustainable. Use the below stacks infrequently, as tolerance will set in.

Phenylpiracetam, Sulbutiamine, Cocoa

Phenylpiracetam is potent, perhaps the most potent of the racetam analoges in terms of stimulant like effect (if we’re discounting the ampakine sunifiram). Sulbutiamine is subtle, but certainly seems to help enhance my energy and drive, when combined with phenylpiracetam I find there to be a dramatic synergy between the two that helps keep me focused and energized. The addition of cocoa supports my mood and completes the stack for me.

Stack Tips:

  • Phenylpiracetam is long lasting. Don’t take this stack 10 hours prior to sleep.
  • Cocoa can be in the form of a few squares dark chocolate >70% , cacao nibs 5-15g  or  cocoa powder 5-15g
  • Sulbutiamine is fat soluble. Take this stack with a meal.

Modafinil and Phenibut

I nicknamed this the “tolerance stack” as the addition of phenibut restricts me to using this once or twice a week. I pull this stack out for days when I really need to sit down get stuff done. For me, modafinil is anxiety inducing and while it does help me accomplish tasks, I have a slight tenancy to become irritable if the dose goes above 100mg per day. The inclusion of 250mg-500mg phenibut really rounds the stack off for me. I’m left in a super positive mood and the drive to get what I need done.

Stack Tips:

  • Start low with modafinil, it’s potent and sometimes more isn’t better. I’ve found 50-100mg (1/4-1/2 a tablet modalert) more than enough if I’m not carrying a stimulant tolerance.
  • Be careful with phenibut. When used sparingly it’s an excellent weapon in your arsenal, used too frequently and you’ll find it’s ineffective. I limit myself to a maximum of twice a week use.
  • Modafinil has a long half life. If you’re sensitive to insomnia, don’t take this stack 10 hours prior to sleep.

CILTEP with Smart Caffeine

I’ve written about this stack before. In short, I like CILTEP, I like Smart Caffeine and I love the two together. CILTEP alone keeps me focused, motivated and increases my desire to learn. The addition of Smart Caffeine really kicks the CILTEP stack into overdrive. I find it the most motivating of all the stacks listed here and occasionally find myself using it as a pre-workout.

Stack Tips;

  • CILTEP remains an effective “base” of my stack that I use on weekdays.
  • I like to add Smart Caffeine 2-3 times in a week
  • If insomnia prone – don’t take this stack less than 8 hours before bed.
